Web Design Process
As a Web design company, we are often asked "what happens next?", this question can arise at any time throughout the website development process, we have therefore outlined below an overview of the steps necessary to create your website from the very first enquiry through to the web site being made available to the Internet.
Step 1 - Gain a high level understanding of the website in terms of purpose, what it needs to do, the website design in terms of look and feel and the intended audience for the web site. It may be possible to indicate a price range for the website development at this early stage, however it may not be for larger and / or the more complex web requirements where all the detail has not yet been thought through and made available to WEBcouk.
Step 2 - If we do not have enough information to provide a sensible quotation for the website design and associated website development, we will make available the WEBcouk Web Design Planner in order to help with the process of creating a better website specification document.
Step 3 - You have decided to have your web design and website development undertaken by WEBcouk, placed an order for your website and now work can start in earnest - we will at this stage seek from you enough information in order for us to provide a Home page website design proposal for your approval. Dependent on the scale and nature of your website, we may also provide examples of one or more other content pages for the website. Although this will look like a real web page, it is more of a mock up to ensure that we have got the basics right at the start of the web development process as this design forms the cornerstone of all that happens next.
During this key phase, the overall site structure and navigation for your website will be clarified. A Site Map of all the pages for the complete website are agreed. This will be in the form of a straightforward hierarchical listing of the pages that will appear in the finished website.
All functions (features) of the website will also be confirmed at this stage, an example of a function would be "submit a CV" for a job site, "book a room" for a hotel, "calculate loan payment" for a mortgage website, "register me for a newsletter", "log a complaint", "request a quotation", etc. etc. - in a nutshell, other than the display of pre-determined information, what else does the website need to do. This is something that has to be agreed at the initial web design stage.
Sign-off is then sought for what is probably the most important part of the web design process, namely agreement of overall website look and feel, site structure and navigation and the Site Map - please note that no further work can proceed on your website until both parties have signed off due to the criticality of getting this step of the web design right first time. Please be assured that the rest of the WEBcouk web design process is equally flexible in accommodating ideas as the website development process continues.
Step 4 - Content provided by yourselves, together with any content you have asked WEBcouk to source will now be mapped to the website design as agreed in Step 3 above. Content will be a combination of pictures, images, text and any newly created website graphics. All agreed functions (features) of the website will now be developed in accordance with your website project schedule and the overall web design structure.
Throughout the process, points of clarification will be sought by members of the WEBcouk team if required. It is important that we receive timely responses to any such enquiries, otherwise the project schedule for your website may be compromised.
As early as is possible in the web design and development process, we will provide online access via the Internet to your website on our development servers so that progress can be monitored on an ongoing basis; and if necessary corrective actions be agreed.
Step 6 - Towards the end of the web project, the web development team will pass to our quality control function the website for final testing purposes. Testing will then be undertaken together with yourselves in order to ensure the website is ready for presentation to the Internet in a "live" form; and that a quality web design has been achieved.
