SEO work - Am I paying someone for achieving things or doing things?
For some types of work, there is not much need to think about this question, for example, an electrician called in to repair a faulty light switch can reasonably be expected to achieve the goal (fix the light switch) at the end of the process of working on the goal (fixing the light switch).
In a highly complex legal case, paying a well regarded barrister to represent you throughout the case does not guarantee that you will be found not guilty. You pay the barrister to do things without any guarantee that he will achieve your goal. Unless of course he is prepared to operate on a no win no fee basis.
In a highly complex legal case you have only one opponent to beat, in a highly competitive business sector you have many opponents trying to achieve the same as yourself, the highest possible ranking in Google - they all want to win, as do you !!
It is only really worth being on page 1 or perhaps 2 on Google for your chosen keywords and phrases; don't forget that if you are competing against thousands, (or perhaps tens of thousands) of others, only 10 / 20 can succeed in this quest. Furthermore, if you did achieve a page 1 or page 2 ranking, you then have to stay there - you have now moved into a new phase and possibly the most difficult, i.e. being very visible for the others to work out how to topple you - they will most certainly start to analyse what you have done to get to where they want to be. On top of this there is a fundamental fact, Google can (and does) unilaterally change the rules, when it wants, on an ongoing basis, potentially causing what is in effect a random drop in your rankings.
Is it therefore worth even trying?
It may or may not be - here are just some of the questions you need to ask...
- Do you have the necessary funds?
- Do you have the time?
- Do you have the stamina?
- Do you have the know how?
- Do you know of a company that will honestly work with you?
- Are there other more cost effective methods of driving quality traffic to your website?
- How much money are you prepared to risk (gamble) on this method of achieving traffic?
- What sort of chance does your particular site have against the competition?
- If you have to solely rely on natural google listings, when do you need to see results?
- Is the potential reward worth the journey?
What would happen if I did nothing other than the basics?
Nobody knows, only Google Inc., who may or may not rank you where you want to be for the keywords and key phrases within your website, (those both behind the scenes and visible to a browser within the text copy of the site)
Do I have a better chance if I do something other than the basics?
Probably, but not necessarily - this in our opinion is the blunt truth
